Comme au début de chaque étape, nous quittons la vallée pour grimper vers la crête des collines par un long chemin en pente raide. Une des plus hautes éminences est Old Winchester Hill, site de 63 hectares formant une réserve naturelle nationale. Les prés calcaires sont entretenus par des troupeaux de moutons des Downs, race trapue spécifique dont la viande et la laine sont appréciées. Au sommet, subsistent des bombements, témoins d’une fortification de l’âge du fer, et de tumuli, de l’âge du bronze. De là-haut la vue est remarquable et s’étend jusqu’à l’île de Wight au-delà du détroit de Solent. En fin d’après-midi, le parcours devient boisé dans la forêt « Queen Elizabeth ».
