Les terrils, ce sont des collines artificielles érigées aux 19e et 20e siècles par l’accumulation des déchets de l’extraction du charbon. Notre pays en compterait environ 900 sur l’axe Haine-Sambre-Meuse, dont 300 considérés comme sites majeurs. En Wallonie, depuis la fermeture du dernier charbonnage en 1984, ils sont devenus, en quelque sorte, pour la plupart, des collines (voire des montagnes) vertes, la végétation ayant progressivement envahi leurs flancs et ils font désormais partie du patrimoine historique, écologique et paysager.
C’est à Bernissart qu’en septembre 2021, avec quelques amis – comme nous, presque tous du troisième âge (parfois même largement entamé...) – nous avons entrepris d’arpenter le sentier des Terrils, à raison d’une sortie chaque vendredi. Au programme, dix-huit étapes d’une vingtaine de kilomètres.
